Abstract

Surface defects such as steps and adsorbed atoms and molecules perturb the electronic structure of the surrounding surface. Recently we observed these perturbations and their effects on adsorbate structure and dynamics with scanning tunneling microscopy. Here we discuss the important implications that substrate-mediated interactions can have on the atomic-scale mechanisms and control of film growth and heterogeneous selective catalysis.
